In 1985/1986, HBS Alumni from Europe expressed their
concern that European universities and business schools were paying
little attention to entrepreneurship but were concentrating more on
teaching management of small business using US case studies. Although
there were some foundations, institutes and individual professors
already interested in entrepreneurship in Europe, their analyses tended
to focus on their national viewpoint of Europe. In addition, they
focused mostly on small family companies.
EFER was founded by Harvard Business School alumnus,
Dr. Bert Twaalfhoven, an experienced entrepreneur and long-time
promoter of entrepreneurship in Europe. He was joined by numerous other
HBS alumni including John McDonald (retired chairman and founder of
McKinsey in Germany) and Max Geldens (director of McKinsey in Holland).
They assembled a group of interested sponsors including European
entrepreneurs and venture capitalists, such as 3i. Over more than 20
years, EFER has worked with an extensive network of universities,
entrepreneurs, banks, venture capital firms, and international
organizations which have supported and been actively involved in EFER’s
activities.
Karen Wilson, HBS alumna and former Executive Director
of the HBS Global Initiative, has worked with EFER since 2003 and
currently serves as an Advisor and Board Member. Yupar Myint joined
EFER as Programme Director in 2008 to develop and manage the European
Entrepreneurship Colloquium (EEC).
